The Gardens

Have you seen our sausage trees?
On the eastern side of Newstead House and elsewhere in Newstead Park, there are sausage trees, Kigelia africanus, which is from the African continent. In Botswana, birds are attracted to the flower buds, young monkeys delve deep into the flowers to get the nectar, baboons, bush pigs, and porcupines eat the fruit, and dugout canoes are made from the tree. At Newstead, they attract possums and rosellas.
